1945 was a pivotal year in British history. The unity that carried Britain through the war allied to the bitter memories of the inter-war years led to a vision of a better society. The spirit of the age was to be our brother’s and our sister’s keeper. Director Ken Loach has used film from Britain’s regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews to create a rich political and social narrative. The Spirit of ‘45 hopes to illuminate and celebrate a period of unprecedented community spirit in the UK, the impact of which endured for many years and which may yet be rediscovered today.

Cap Bankers Bonuses
Europe wants to cap bankers bonuses, but some are not so keen… http://bit.ly/YLZmlq. So to help things move along, why not send your MEP a letter or email in support of the cap. Use the draft below or amend as you would like… they don’t get much post, so please make them feel wanted 🙂
Dear [MP’s name]
I am writing to ask that you support the measures within the European Parliament’s Capital Markets Directive 4. Please work to ensure they operate as intended, to reduce the incentives for short term risk taking. The bonus cap is especially welcome, as it should also act to bring the currently excessive overall pay levels in the financial sector closer to those in other areas of the economy. Whilst, some in the City of London argue the measures would put the UK at a disadvantage as our finance sector is so large, it is also the case that EU –wide action is preferable to any taken in the UK alone. Countries outside the EU, including Switzerland, are sympathetic to these latest measures and will now be encouraged to take similar actions themselves.
I hope the EU will continue to seek ways to improve economic stability and fairer distribution of wealth. Progress in these areas is long overdue and will benefit us all.
Yours sincerely, [Your name]
